Addressing Food Justice

Middle School Students Share Valuable Food Access Insights

Our 7th and 8th-grade students have shared valuable insights into their food access experiences, revealing both strengths and areas for growth. While 38% report that food is easy to access, 10% face some difficulty, and 5% find it very challenging to obtain.

A majority of students (90%) rely on grocery stores for their food, while 30% turn to corner markets and farmers markets. Distance remains a key factor in access, with 58% of students saying the nearest grocery store is 5-15 minutes away and 25% facing a longer 15-30 minute journey.

When asked what types of food they want more access to, students expressed strong preferences: 45% want more fruits and vegetables, 60% crave snacks, 30% desire ready-to-eat meals, and 32% are looking for more protein options like meat and fish.

As for barriers, distance (25%), cost (27%), and transportation (11%) emerged as the top challenges that impact food access. These findings emphasize the ongoing need to address the obstacles that prevent full and equitable access to nutritious food for our students and families.

We are committed to addressing these needs and ensuring that our KIPPsters have the resources they need to thrive. The voices of our students are an important reminder that there is always more work to do in creating a community where everyone has access to healthy and affordable food.
