Opening Letter - KIPP Chicago Public Schools

The Whole Child Review Issue No. 15, February 2025

Opening Letter

Dear KIPP Chicago Champions, Educators, and Supporters,

As many of you have heard, I am beginning a new chapter in my journey after 15 incredible years of serving as Executive Director of KIPP Chicago. Reflecting on this transition, one of the things I’m most proud of is the creation and growth of the Whole Child Review. Born out of our desire to evolve as an organization, it has become a powerful way to share, celebrate, and advance the work we do to center the holistic well-being of our students and communities.

I couldn’t be more excited to pass the baton to Rashid Bell, a leader whose heart and vision embody everything the Whole Child Initiative stands for. Rashid’s journey with KIPP Chicago over the past 14 years reflects his deep commitment to creating spaces where students feel seen, supported, and empowered. His leadership at KIPP One Primary, a school that exemplifies the essence of whole-child work, has inspired so much of our progress. As he steps into the role of Executive Director, I am thrilled to support him during this transition and confident in his ability to take this work to even greater heights.

This season’s Whole Child Review is a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and love. Whether it’s the transformative projects in our classrooms, partnerships that amplify student voices, or the relentless efforts of our teams to center equity in all that we do, this issue reflects the heart of what makes KIPP Chicago extraordinary. It’s also a reminder of the strength we find in moments of gratitude—a theme that resonated deeply for me in Dr. Hines’s book, Tomorrow’s Children. Her chapter on gratitude has inspired so much of how we approach this work: celebrating the beauty in small, intentional acts that leave a lasting impact.

As I reflect on the journey we’ve shared, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this community. Together, we have built something truly special—something rooted in love, hope, and the unwavering belief in the potential of every child. While my role may be shifting, my commitment to KIPP Chicago and our mission remains steadfast. I will continue to walk alongside you, cheering on the brilliance and resilience of our students, families, and team.

With immense gratitude,

April
